Good Luck Thing

I have to go to work on Saturday making tomorrow Monday number two. How horrible is that?! Two Mondays in a row. Good Lord.  What makes up for it is this wonderful coffee shop right next to my house. I go there to read and write almost every other day. I go there in the morning before work or after work and hang out for a couple hours. I don't know what I did right, besides become a regular, because the owners totally dote on me. In the morning, I always get free refills on lattes. I got to taste several different types of coffee to determine my favorite one and thats the one they always give me without me having to ask. When I go after work, they ask me if I have already had dinner and if not they feed me. Or give me dessert. All on the house. Its awesome, but kind of awkward. Sometimes I want to say no, no thank you so much, but its fine. I need to ask about the cultural thing going on here. Am I supposed to do something else besides  buy their coffee and hang out? I hope not, because they just gave me the most delicious chicken sandwich and apple pie!

Also - I caught a falling leaf yesterday which is supposed to bring the catcher a full year of good luck as long as you keep the leaf around. I've actually been trying for years to catch a falling leaf. It's way harder then you would think. And I finally have! Let's go lucky year! And then I found a beautiful long, black and white feather which I picked up right after catching my leaf. So I know this good luck thing is true.

  2. So..I'm tryin' to figure out this 'different coffee' thing. Now coffee from Angola, say, is about the same from coffee from,er...Kenya. Right? No. Wait. Let's say the coffee is from Uganda, and the other coffee is from Kenya. Is that o.k.? Can we agree to that? So the little boys and girls from Uganda pick the Ugandan coffee beans out in the incredibly hot sun and under the watchful eye of some ruthless sonofabitch with an AK-47, while the little Kenyan boys and girls pluck the Kenyan coffee beans under the watchful eye of some ruthless sonofabitch with an AK-47. Frankly, I don't see the difference. To me, the coffee beans seem the same. Perhaps Juan Valdez is onto something in the marketing department. Maybe it's his donkey. I bet that the little boys and girls in Africa wish that they had donkeys instead of Juan Valdez. I wonder if they HATE Juan Valdez for having a donkey? Maybe they just hate Juan Valdez OR...(meditate on this!)maybe they hate his donkey! OOOH! Imagine that all the while that the kids in Africa have to pull those damned beans off those damned branches in the blazing equatorial sun, they are cursing the day that the donkey was born! Could THAT be the difference in the coffee? Perhaps...

  3. When I was in south america we stayed at this tiny little hostel run by the cutest family ever. I was walking around outside admiring the striking beauty when all of a sudden a bird pooped on my arm. Alarmed and a little disgusted I went into the kitchen to wash it off. Well little old grannie was sitting my the sink and when she saw the excrement on my arm she freaked... She grabbed my arm and pulled me around the house to show all of the family members yelling "BUENA SUERTE!!! BUENA SUERTE" (good luck). Finally she let me go and I snuck over to the ocean to wash it off. The whole experience got me thinking... that bird could have pooped anywhere but he chose my arm....it made me feel pretty special. So I guess good luck comes in many forms...
